The concept of cultural intelligence emerged at the beginning of the 21st century thanks to the work of Soon Ang, Linn Van Dyne and Christopher Early. It is now in full development.  Cultural intelligence (CI), beyond the existing notions of cultural sensitivity and awareness, is the ability to demonstrate social-emotional intelligence in other cultural contexts. It should be stressed that, if it facilitates a priori the development of cultural intelligence, a high socio-emotional and social intelligence is not the guarantee of it. Beyond the current cultural knowledge, it is a question of becoming aware of the functioning of culture, values and beliefs which found the thought and motivation of a person or a group, and of exploring behavioural intelligence.

According to Earley and Peterson, cultural intelligence provides the theoretical framework for understanding how one should adapt, adjust or reinvent oneself in response to culture and situation. The emphasis here is on a circular, non-linear pathway: it is not a step-by-step process leading to an "end result". On the contrary, through cultural intelligence, one learns more about oneself and one's ability to interact with different cultures. Cultural intelligence can always be improved and developed.

For the Cultural Intelligence Center, at the origin of the CQ test, cultural intelligence revolves around 4 main skills:

  1. being curious and having the motivation to work well with others.

  2. understanding the types of differences that describe one group in relation to another, without resorting to stereotypes about specific cultures.

  3. be able to plan effectively for multi-cultural interactions.

  4. be able to adapt his/her socio-professional behaviour when the situation requires it.

Thinking of cultural intelligence as a set of skills implies that it can be learned, worked on and improved.

The Cultural Intelligence Test, or CQ, is an internationally recognised test based on rigorous academic research conducted in over 100 countries.
